Jinan, Wade-Giles romanization Chi-nan, conventional Tsinan, city and capital, Shandong sheng (province), China. It lies in the northern foothills of the Mount Tai massif, on the high ground just south of the Huang He (Yellow River), which provides the major route along the north side of the Shandong Hills.
